Rebuild The Wall Update

Back in May, Cyclone Amphan and further monsoonal rains uprooted many trees and caused the collapse of almost 1km of Udayan’s boundary wall in addition to damage in previous years caused by roots and the monsoon. Further areas of the boundary wall were also at risk of collapsing and risked damaging neighbouring properties.
Thanks to our loyal supporters and St Joan of Arc Catholic School funds were sent to Udayan to start the work of rebuilding the boundary wall ensuring the safety of the children of Udayan. The funds raised by St Joan’s were in support of their Headteacher’s fundraising efforts entitled Le Tour de Province of Westminster in which Peter Sweeney cycled 583 kilometres visiting the five cathedrals within the Ecclesiastical Province of Westminster raising a considerable sum of money to keep the children of Udayan safe.
Cyclone Amphan caused mass destruction in West Bengal and in particular, Kolkata which was already struggling under strict COVID-19 lockdown.  Essential services such as water, electricity and telephone were unavailable for several days and people had difficulty getting repairs done to their homes due to shortage of labour with migrant labour returning to their villages.
Our thanks also goes to the staff local to Udayan who conducted much of the clean up work during the pandemic restoring Udayan to it’s former glory and preparing the site for the builders to start rebuilding the wall. Building works are now complete and Udayan once again has a secure boundary wall to keep its children safe without the need for additional security patrols.
