Udayan’s newly refurbished kitchen
The trustees of City of Joy Aid, UK were delighted to be able to provide funding to Udayan to refurbish the kitchen which feeds 310 boys and girls at Udayan three times a day. The cooks, Robin and Sanjay, supported by Suren and Bablu, provide three nutritious meals to the children of leprosy sufferers every day. Meals that we all take for granted, but allow these children to grow, receive an education, in a home made of bricks and mortar with running water – the basics that the children of leprosy sufferers would be deprived of without the support of Udayan, such is the stigma that surrounds leprosy. Each meal consists of rice, dahl and a vegetable curry with protein of egg, chicken, fish or tofu once a day.
The newly refurbished kitchen was long overdue – Sanjay reckons it was last refurbished some 27 year years ago. The new kitchen is organised, hygienic and child-friendly. The new kitchen boasts:
- 4 chimneys for proper ventilation
- A marble flooring for easy cleaning
- A proper drainage system
- Dedicated crockery room for all our utensils
- Separate storage room to keep things tidy and safe
- Improved ventilation system that removes hot air and brings in cool air
- Extended handwashing facilities to enable the children can wash their hands and plates comfortably
Udayan started using their new, modern facilities on Wednesday 16th April, Bengali New Year, after they were inaugurated by the staff and children.
City of Joy Aid, UK is indebted to its donors who make projects like this possible. On behalf of the children – thank you.
It is our pleasure to be able to support the refurbishment of Udayan’s kitchen and the result looks fantastic. Of course none of this would be possible without our donors in the UK and beyond – thank you for your support.
This transformation of our kitchen wouldn’t have been possible without the continuous love and support from our longlasting friends City of Joy Aid, UK. 🙏 Thank you for believing in us and helping make everyday cooking more efficient, hygienic, and joyful for everyone at Udayan!
